Oh ,sorry. Uh a led pencil to keep all of your outlines from being too thick or easy to smudge, as though you were using a regular drawing pencil.

Also, I scanned a couple of my drawings, check 'em out!

If by led you mean mechanical. Then yes, but it's all up to user preference. I use a mechanical pencil because I prefer the sharp thin lines.
There's always a downside to both, the mechanical can cause marks that can't be erased (I have a bunch of those throughout the comic) and the regular gets dulled down so you have to sharpen it constantly.

As for smudging they both smudge pretty easy, the harder you press onto the paper the more visible the smudges will be.
The way to help prevent smudging is to either use a piece of paper under your hand or work on one area till you're satisfied and move on to another. The latter way would kinda follow the same pattern as you read it, from left to right (unless you're left handed).
